Connecting essay 2- Slinkachu and Battleground Beauty

Slinkachu

Battleground Beauty

In the below image the artist Slinkachu positions miniature figures in interesting locations and positions to create thought provoking images.  Slinkachu generally employs landscape orientation to give him images a more natural feel as well as using a shallow depth of field to allow the viewer to focus on the images subject.  The majority of Slinkachu's photographs are shot outside to give them a more natural feel.  Slinkachu has positioned the camera at an angle slightly above the characters to create the feel that the viewer is watching them.  The surveillance camera symbolises the way that the population is constantly being observed and that nothing is truly private.

My image replicates Slinkachu's in the use of a landscape orientation as well as a shallow depth of field however my image differs from Slinkachu's as it was shot in a studio and the soldiers are positioned closely to the camera which has been positioned on the same level as the soldiers.  This series was also shot using a macro lens to create a highly detailed image.  I have increased the saturation of the image as well as brightening it and reducing the shadowing to allow for a more grungy and brutal appearance.  This series focuses on the brutal visual constraints society places on women and looks into the fact that sometimes attaining "beauty" can seem like a war.

I have chosen to link these two images together as they both discuss social issues and feature the use of miniature figurines.  These photos both tackle different opinions allowing then to fit successfully into the genre of personal opinions.  The use of miniature figurines in both images creates a slightly comic quirky twist on the pressing social issues featured.

  1. Your work gives a succinct analysis of your work within the context of other photographers, theres is some good technical analysis and contextual explanation to your work, well done.
